Center stage is a table. On the table is a stack of 20 or so cards (playing or index). Kate enters from stage right. Another performer enters from stage left. AP is carrying a pillow with the word “REALITY” printed in big bold letters on it.

When Kate reaches the table she begins building a tower of cards. While she is building the tower, she says the following lines.

Kate: I’m going to get several flexible work-from-home copyediting gigs. I can copyedit anything from articles to newsletters to academic journal articles. Even though I don’t have a lot of experience with AP Style, I’ll be able to take the tests to familiarize myself with it. I catch typos in publications all the time, and I’ve got years of general experience from editing my own work and other writing and editing jobs I’ve had in the past. It will be great to be able to fit in high wage hourly work around my own schedule. I could even work for several hours one day a week just to get it all out of the way then be free the rest of the time.

As Kate speaks, AP stands nearby holding the pillow. At some point during Kate’s lines, AP swings the pillow at Kate’s card tower, knocking the tower down. Kate does not know in advance when it will happen. Kate stops talking.

AP: But you get repetitive stress injuries from constant scrolling.

Kate gathers up the cards that have fallen. Then she begins building another card tower. While she is building the card tower, she says the following lines.

Kate: I’m going to start an immersive consulting business. I have studied immersive techniques extensively and this gives me a huge advantage in this emerging cultural area. Even though I’ve never done consulting work before, I’ll advise companies how to incorporate immersive elements into their events and also provide training for their staff on how to use three simple techniques to improve their own experience of their workplace. I’ll also make this workshop available to the wider public to guide them through experiencing immersive art, theater, and events.

At some point while Kate is talking, AP knocks down the card tower. Kate stops talking.

AP: But you hate networking and wearing business clothes. 

Kate gathers up the cards that have fallen. Then she begins building another card tower. While she is building the card tower, she says the following lines.

Kate: I love podcasts and I’ve wanted to make one for years. I don’t have all of the structure worked out, but I can get a few guests and see where things go. I’m going to chat about different facets of the creative process, from the idea all the way to the finished product. The first episode will be about investigating materials. The second will be a deconstruction of each phase of the idea process. The third will be about workspaces and how to organize the flow of a creative work. The fourth will be about encountering other artists’ work. The fifth will be a “day in the life.”

At some point while Kate is talking, AP knocks down the card tower. Kate stops talking.

AP: But you aren’t chatty and hate talking off the cuff.

Kate bends down to pick up the cards, but instead sits on the floor.

Kate: So where does that leave me?

AP sits down on the floor next to Kate.

AP: Would you like this pillow?
